Tiles

I enjoy creating dimension within the thickness of an inch or less with my bas-relief tiles. These tiles are modeled in clay, cast in plaster, then press molded or slip cast from porcelain or stoneware, and glazed.

A French term from the Italian basso-relievo ("low relief"), bas relief is a sculpture technique in which figures and/or other design elements are just barely more prominent than the (overall flat) background.

Japanese Archer

8.5" x 6" x 1", soda fired porcelain

Makoto Yabe, a Japanese potter and master with clay, glaze and design inspired the image on the tile. See him in the background demonstrating on the potter’s wheel for his adoring students. His last name, Yabe, means Archer. The setting sun, the water and Archer image were inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e, woodblock prints of the 17th – 20th centuries.
